Cúrate Mijita is an painting made of acrylic, wood and enamel. I completed this painting for the Bonita Museum & Cultural Center
for their Día de los Muertos exhibition curated by Maricruz Alvarado. The piece grew from my own healing journey, but bringing it into this exhibition felt like the right moment to dedicate it to my grandpa. A way to honor his legacy as a sign painter and reflect on how we carry our ancestors through what we create. Using the same exact materials he once used.

Dedicated to My Grandpa

My grandpa Art painted signs. My dad followed in his footsteps, and I grew up watching my dad create.
I never got to meet my grandpa, but sometimes I look at what I make with my hands and
wonder what parts of him I’m getting to know through myself.

This piece is for him. For the creative path he began, and for the connection
that continues even though we never shared a moment together.

Cúrate Mijita:
Finding My Way Back

Cúrate Mijita began in a season when I felt lost. Looking inward meant facing things I had spent years avoiding my fears, my pain, and the parts of myself I didn’t know how to hold.

Art gave me a place to begin. To feel, to question, and to slowly reconnect with myself. “Cúrate, mijita” became a gentle reminder to give myself the care and patience I needed while finding my way.

Acrylic, Wood, Enamel and the Work of My Hands

For this piece, I brought the artwork into an acrylic and wood display. Working on it reminded me of growing up around my dad’s sign painting, watching an idea become something you could stand in front of.

Now I’m finding my own way of doing that. Same materials, but my own story, and a connection to the hands that created before mine.

Behind the Scenes

I finished Cúrate Mijita just in time for the Bonita Museum’s Día de los Muertos exhibition.
I had already been thinking about dedicating it to my grandpa, so sharing it in a space honoring our ancestors felt especially meaningful.

Here’s a little of what went into bringing it together, the painting, the display, and
the final details before it left my studio.
